Communicating Science Broadly:
Description:
Recent technological and social changes have presented new challenges for science organizations to communicate their messages to the lay audience. "Traditional media"-the once-major television networks, newspapers and magazines-have given way to countless Internet news sites, blogs, personal-device downloads, wireless transmissions and the like, competing among a population that has become highly pluralized in not only its want for information and how (and when) it receives it, but also its cultural demographics. Organizations that once relied upon the mass media to deliver their messages must explore new avenues. Through programs to communicate science broadly by means in addition to the mainstream media, NSF is creating products and processes that make learning and understanding science, technology, engineering and mathematics part of every-day life. In today's technological culture, opportunities for learning abound in both community and personal settings.
