Purpose
The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, U.S. Department of Education is sponsoring three on-site informational workshops and one virtual workshop to provide assistance to applicants seeking grants under the Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) program. Under the program, discretionary grants for up to 60 months will be awarded to local educational agencies (LEAs), to support the implementation of smaller learning communities (SLCs) and activities to improve student academic achievement in large public high schools with enrollments of 1,000 or more students.
A Notice Inviting Applications was published in the November 26, 2007 Federal Register. The deadline for the notice of intent to apply is January 10, 2008. Applications must be submitted by 4:30 pm Washington, DC time on February 25, 2008. Technical Assistance Workshop Event Locations
All those interested in applying for an SLC grant are welcome to attend one of these free informational workshops being sponsored by the Department of Education. Each workshop will be held at a hotel site in each of the following cities:
- St. Louis, MO, Monday, December 3
- Washington, DC, Friday, December 7
- Scottsdale, AZ, Monday, December 10
- Virtual T.A. Workshop Webinar, Wednesday, December 12, 3:00 to 5:00 pm EST. For inquiries about the webinar or to participate in the webinar, please register by emailing your name, telephone number, and email address to: slc@optimalsolutionsgroup.com.
Information Available at the Workshop
The workshops will provide potential applicants information about the SLC program, the absolute and competitive priorities, selection criteria, program requirements, the submission of applications through Grants.gov, and other information. U.S. Department of Education staff will share their expertise with you and will be available to address any questions you may have regarding the grant application preparation and submission process.
